Rick Griffin
As a young surfer growing up in Southern California, Rick was influenced by California street rods, pinstriping, and Native American art. After high school, Rick began work as a staff artist working for Surfer magazine. While working at Surfer, he created a comic strip starring “Murphy”, a character that became an icon in the California surf scene. In 1966, Rick found himself in San Francisco during the burgeoning hippie movement and he began creating rock posters that incorporated surfing
imagery, vivid colors and wild lettering. People loved Rick's unique, psychedelic style and he went on to design artwork and album sleeves for rock legends including the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix, as well as posters for landmark events and the logo for Rolling Stone magazine. Today, Rick is remembered as one of the leading designers of psychedelic art in the '60s and for his work within surfing.
